The body attempts to maintain a constant core temperature through a balance of heat loss and heat gain. Simply put, we function better at certain temperatures, and our body works towards maintaining it. 

Exercise raises the body’s core temperature, which is cooled down by sweating and panting. When the body puts in this extra effort, the blood flow to our hearts and lungs is affected. Excessive heat can cause mental changes like confusion, unconsciousness and also leads to physical exhaustion. 

Blood flow to the wrist is increased by 5 times during exercise. Blood vessels are close to the surface which allows a cooling device to instantly work on your body’s temperature and reduce thermal load.

Heat Stress

Heat stress occurs when the body’s means of controlling its internal temperature starts to fail.

During any sporting activity, heat generation by the body is accelerated. The body tries to cool down, but external temperature interferes with the heat exchange between the body and the environment, so radiation, convection and conduction fail first, leaving only evaporation. The higher the core temperature becomes, the more fluid an athlete loses through the skin. Copious sweating takes a heavy toll on a body already challenged by physical exercise. Marathon runners lose up to 6 liters of water through their skin during a race. The body channels existing body fluids to the skin to lower temperature which puts stress on the circulatory system. The heart works harder to accommodate the fuel requirement of muscle movement and the need to reduce body heat.

Heat stress causes fatigue and fatigue lowers or stops performance. The more energy an athlete puts into keeping his or her body temperature at a safe level, the less is available for muscle movement so endurance fails as well. By finding ways to cool during an activity, it is possible to keep body temperature at an optimal level to enhance performance.

Heat illness

Heat illness is a spectrum of disorders due to environmental exposure to heat. It includes minor conditions such as heat cramps, heat syncope, and heat exhaustion as well as the more severe condition known as heat stroke, a medical emergency that can lead to death. Heat exhaustion is a result of the combination of excessive heat and dehydration. Heat illness, Exertional Heat Stress, and Exertional Heat Stroke are very real and major problems athletes face during sports. Heat illness is one of the top 3 causes of sudden death in sports and a leading cause of death and disability among U.S. high school athletes. It can advance quickly in football players and runners, and early warning signs of heat stroke can be subtle.

Pre-cooling is used to provide a wider range in which core temperature can rise, thus delaying the increase in cardiovascular strain. By finding ways to cool during an activity, it is possible to keep body temperature at an optimal level to enhance performance. Body cooling can be an effective means of attenuating the rise in core temperature and can be done pre- exercise, during exercise, during break and post-exercise. There is thorough research that proves the effectiveness of cooling for improving performance and hastening recovery.

However, cooling so far has been and continues to be done with brute force. Optimum temperatures are seldom taken into consideration when performing cooling since there is no way to maintain set temperatures with the equipment currently available, which are ice baths, ice packs, ice buckets or bulky cooling machines. These devices are all characterized by severely limited portability, difficulty to maintain and pain to use. None of these can maintain the optimum temperatures for cooling for any length of time. None of these can be used during a game or workout and most are not feasible for immediate pre or post cooling at the venue where the athlete trains or competes.

The dhamaSPORT is the next generation of cooling for improving performance and recovering faster. It consistently cools at pre programmed temperature levels for up to 4 hours on a single charge, irrespective of ambient temperatures. It is lightweight, easy and hassle-free to use.

Extensive literature review revealed that the wrist gives out 5 times more heat than other parts of the body and the optimum temperatures for heat transfer for effective body cooling without causing any tissue damage. To test these findings, we created prototypes over 2 years, and confirmed them through trials on a number of users across a wide spectrum.

When core temperature rises, the body sends the excess heat out by sending blood to the extremities where the heat is dissipated out. The blood returns to the core cooler, thus reducing core temperatures. The dhamaSPORT works as an amplified version of this thermoregulation mechanism by significantly cooling the blood flowing through the wrist, resulting in lower core temperatures.

It can be used anywhere pre, post or during exercise or even when you just want to cool down on a hot day. It is the ideal pain-free solution for post-game recovery since athletes can recover without having to miss out on any post-game activity.

Our device was a huge hit with US track and field athletes at the Rio Olympics. The game village was an hour away from the venue, so they strapped on their dhamaSPORTs and underwent recovery on the bus and didn’t have to visit the ice baths after.
